1.
Auction Consultant. Nowadays you can bid electronically, often live, in auctions around the world. This dividend of the Communication Revolution means you do not need to travel to attend auctions in person. You can bid from your office or car! True enough, but that advantage must be balanced against the fact you are seeing only an electronic image of a coin you bidding irrevocably to buy. The feedback I receive from unhappy collectors is that more and more people are very dissatisfied with their auction purchases. Photoshop is wonderful tool for "enhancing" images, but a coin that sold on the basis of an "enhanced" image cannot be returned the auction that sold it. Read the small print!

There is no substitute for holding the coin in your hand before you bid on it, or perhaps there is one substitute, having an expert who has held thousands of these coins in his hand look at it and discuss it with you. Slabs are unfortunately no substitute for real expertise. I have seen ex-jewelry gold cobs in mint state holders, and mint state gold cobs in holders with XF grades. Collectors wonder why the MS 62 Lima 8 escudos that they bought for $12,500 two years ago won't attract a minimum bid of $8500. It's because they bought a slabbed ex-jewelry coin and the word is out on that Old Maid coin.

The remedy for these worries is to engage an expert who will tell what to buy and what not to buy and for how much. Further, an expert should guarantee your satisfaction with any auction purchases he has been paid to advise you upon. In other words, if  problems arise, you should be able to return it to him for your full auction price!

If you have 10-20 years experience with buying gold cobs, you don't need any help. But if you can insure that you make good choices at auction, isn't it worth 2-3%? Contact us for further details.

2. Appraisals. If you have a collection of Spanish Colonials and wish to know their current value, we can help you.  We will also advise you on your options for sale. For larger collections, we will travel. Otherwise, you need to supply us with with clear jpgs and coin weights and any provenance. Our basic fee is $75/hr.

3. Identifications and Authentications. If you've inherited or found what you think is a valuable Spanish Colonial coin and want to know what it is and what it's worth, we will help you. Send us clear jpgs of both sides of the coin, the coin's weight, and any info you have about where it came from. We charge a nominal $15 for this what-is-it service. By paypal or check. Obviously we cannot authenticate a coin from these images, but we can tell you with a good probability whether it is authentic and that will save you the difficulties and costs of submitting to a mass grading service like PCGS or NGC. If your coin seems to be authentic, we will also give you advice about how to sell it.
