(Philip V 1700-1747)

FROM THE 1715 PLATE FLEET

M23. Mexico 1714 Mo J 8 escudos,

mint mint and boldly struck on large planchet,

27.03 gms, 33.5 mm. Calico LA ONZA #393

The chronology of the 1714 varieties is still somewhat uncertain, but it seems likely that the year began with the short-lived GRAT varieties and soon settled on this type, with the date on the obverse and the legend reading DEI G 1714. On 1714 issues assayer Jose (J) Eustaquio de Leon used both a smaller M and then a much larger M for the Mexico City mint mark. The large M became the type used on 1715 and later issues, suggesting that the smaller M, as on this 8 escudos, came earlier.

Almost all Fleet 1714 Mexican onzas  were recovered from the Colored Beach site, where the 1715 Fleet patache Nieves was wrecked.
